For sale is a
rare 1925 “Revelation” model trumpet, serial number 83328, made by Frank Holton
& Company, Elkhorn, Wisconsin.  The
trumpet is silver-plated brass with gold-plated bell throat.  The horn has been cleaned and restored to its
original condition.  It comes with the
original period Holton trumpet case and a silver-plated Holton Heim brass
trumpet mouthpiece appropriate for the horn also in good condition.

The horn has a
4.5-inch bell and a second valve slide inside bore of .459-inch.  The “Revelation” is the first Holton model
that I am aware of that has the “reverse” lead pipe and tuning slide
design.  This design was later
incorporated in the Martin Committee model trumpet created by Renold Shilke
(and the “Committee, which consisted of Schilke, Vincent Bach, F.A. Reynolds,
et al) around 1939-40, Schilke’s own trumpets when he began to make them in the
early 1950s, and the early Schilke-designed Yamaha 600 & 700 series
trumpets made in the 1960s and 1970s.

The horn has a
warm to bright tone and is very responsive with very good intonation in all
partial levels; it projects quite well.
Note that the horn is marked LP for low pitch, which means it plays a
concert “A” pitch at standard 440.  It
also has a unique stop-lock mechanism on the main tuning slide to allow for a
quick key change from B-flat to A.

The valves are
all numbered with the serial number of the horn.  They are original, copper-clad, tight
fitting, quiet and quite fast and light to the touch.  This horn is very clean, inside and out, new
corks, felts and springs.  The slides
pull easily and are properly lubed.  Third
slide is very smooth and responsive to the slightest touch.  This horn is one of the best 1920s vintage
professional level horns I have played and I compare it with the Martin
“Committee” trumpets of the 1940s.  It
has a big but slightly brighter tone than the Martin Committee medium bore
horns that incorporate its design characteristics, but playing characteristics
are similar.  The valves are very fast
and quiet.  Valve compression is very
good.

This model was
the horn of choice in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s trumpet section in the
1920s and 1930s. The great Edward Llewellyn played “Revelation” horns made by
Frank Holton throughout his illustrious career with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, as did Renold Schilke and many other notable performers of the
period.  It is probably fair to say that
a good deal of Holton can be found in the designs of Schilke and many that
followed including Martin, Yamaha and others.

The “Revelation” model is a classic creation
of the 1920s and was meant to satisfy the needs of both professional orchestral
players and popular dance band performers.
It has a very full and pleasing tone and is not “Tinny” sounding like
many vintage horns of the same period.  Its
sound and play action compare favorably with newer, more expensive medium bore
(.459-inch) professional level trumpets like Bach, King, Conn, Yamaha, Martin,
etc.  This attractive, well constructed,
eighty-five year old classic trumpet with excellent playing characteristics and
great sound represents very good value.
