VINTAGE MARTIN HANDCRAFT TENOR SAXOPHONE, LOW PITCH
BY THE MARTIN BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY, ELKHART, INDIANA, U.S.A.
For sale is a vintage lacquered brass Martin Handcraft tenor saxophone with some silver plated keys. Some keys have mother-of-pearl inlays. The serial number is 1234NN on the body and 1284NN on the neck. Probably intended to be the same numbers but the 8 was not fully stamped so it looks like a 3. Or the stamper-guy misread the number and stamped it incorrectly. The age of the instrument is supposed to be around 1938.
The instrument comes in three parts: (1) mouthpiece (two are included, see note below); (2) goose neck; and (3) body. All parts seem to be present. There appears to be one area where a rod bracket was soldered to the body. The repair feels solid. All pads are present and appear to seat fully. All keys move freely and return to their original positions. There are several soft dents on the body. The largest being approximately ½” in diameter. The bell is perfectly true round shaped. The majority of the dents are all very soft shallow indentations, no sharp hits here. No dents on the goose neck. The lacquer is moderately spotted with tarnish spots. The instrument also includes a music holder for marching.
CASE
The case is a Conn case, olive in color and is in average condition. with metal clamps and keyway (no key). The leather handle is worn, but secure. The inside is blue faux fur.
MOUTHPIECES
Two mouthpieces come with this instruemnt: (1) M. C. Gregory, Los Angeles, 5A, circa 1975; and (2) Selmar, Paris, Soloist D. Both have silver reed caps.
The instrument condition (described by one who knows practically nothing about music or baritone saxophones) is that the instrument appears to be complete and in average condition for it’s age.
I do not know how to play a saxophone so I can not verify if it plays or how it sounds. I understand the risk that you take in bidding without that information. The instrument has been in my dad’s collection for longer than I know about. He may be the original owner. Local pick-up and/or inspection is preferred. Contact me by eBay to set-up a meeting time and location.
SHIPPING
The instrument, as it is presently configured, will be shipped in its case. The box will be wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in an appropriate cardboard box. If the package costs less to ship than you paid, I refund the difference.
