Vintage
CF Martin & Co Baritone Ukulele
Style 51 w/ tortoise body binding
Most likely from
the 1960's
- Up for your
consideration is a
Vintage CF Martin & Co Baritone Ukulele. - Based on my
personal research, I think this one is from around the 1960's (first produced in the 1960's): it has T frets, ivoroid-button
tuners, plastic binding, gold
martin front headstock decal and stamped on the inside: "CF Martin Co,
Nazareth PA" (this was hard to take a picture of but I tried my best!). - Style 51, 10" wide, 20-1/8" scale, mahogany body,
white-black-white soundhole rings, 2-ply top binding with dark outer tortoise
layer, single-ply tortoise back binding, pin bridge, rosewood fingerboard,
14 frets clear of the body. - This uke has had some repairs so it's definitely not a museum
piece but it's aged with
nice patina look on the tortoise body binding. It would make a wonderful
player as it has been recently setup by a luthier. - In good,
playable condition but
there's a handful of issues to point. At some point in time, the uke had
some repairs done it. The following damages and repairs were present
before I acquired this uke. First, the bridge looks like was reseated at one point and the job wasn't very clean - there's some white glue-ish residue still seen at the edges of the bridge. It's currently solid and hasn't budged since I've owned the uke. Second, there's a crack on the front lower left-side of the soundboard. It's about 3" long and was repaired before my time. It's seem to be stable - no movement when I applied gentle pressure in the area. Finally, the finish is in decent condition but there's numerous minor scuffs, dents and scratches throughout the front and back. There's also some very slight crazing on the front but it's minor at this point. There was two other issues that I had repaired by a luthier (see below). - When I acquired the
uke (a few months ago), I had it looked at by a professional, Martin-authorized
luthier in Southern Connecticut. The luthier, Paul Neri (Clinton,
CT), repaired a crack that ran along the mid-joint of the front soudboard. The crack was actually just a small natural separation between where the two-halves of the soundboard meet. He applied a small amount of heat and hide-glue to seal it. Furthermore, the uke had some slight curvature to the fretboard/neck that resulted in high playing action. Paul was able to apply heat to the neck and corrected the curvature. The uke has excellent
action now and now in
ready-to-play condition; no string buzzes! He examined the uke for any
structural defects also. Finally, Paul strung it with new Martin baritone uke strings. - Although this uke has had some repairs, it plays well, sounds great and the tuners function
well.
Action height seems to be pretty good for me. Overall, it makes a good
impression! - Includes a new Oscar Schmidt deluxe hard-case. It's very nice (has a nice fat vintage style leather handle) and is really similar to the popular hardcases that comes with Ko'olau ukes.
- Check out my other
auctions! I'm also listing the 3 other vintage ukes (Martin Style 2
Soprano,
Martin Tenor, Favilla Baritone)!
