This is a "Holy Grail", pre-war, Martin D-28 from 1938. Serial number 71803. Beautiful quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Adirondack spruce top with scalloped bracing. Herringbone top purfling. Ivoroid-bound body. 20-fret ebony fingerboard with split diamond style inlays. Original finish on the body and headplate. Original nut, pickguard, and "butter bean" style Grover tuners. Decal logo. Popsicle brace, and scalloped X bracing with rear shifted bracing. It was sent back to Martin in the early 1950's to be refretted and those frets are still in excellent condition. The neck is straight but needs to be reset. The neck pocket is solid though. There's the typical B-string crack that extends from the bridge to the soundhole. A small crack is in the top at the lower side of the bass bout. Some evidence that the bridge was taken off and reglued. The original case is gone. All in all the guitar is in solid condition, sounds incredible, and is ready for another 71 years of happy performance.
You rarely see late 30s Martin dreadnoughts come up for sale. This one is exceptionally unusual because it's a single owner guitar. Freddie Burns bought this from a local music store here in Memphis in 1939. He bought another D28 in the early 1950's but sold it immediately. He said it didn't sound good when compared to this '38 D28. This guitar has remained his only instrument since. It has opened up beautifully!
Freddie's now 93 years old and has decided to sell his beloved guitar. He began playing this guitar on WMC radio, 1940-1949.One Grand Ole Opryguest in 1943WHBQ Radio 1949-1954, 3 programs dailyWHBQ-TV, Channel 13 1954-1970Mutual Broadcasting System, Coast-To-Coast, feeding 448 radio stations and Forces Radio in both Europe and Pacific areas (The Blue Danube Network from Vienne, Australia, and Radio Tokyo, 1949-1952)Recorded Star Talent label (6 sides) Dallas, TX 1951Freddie's band in the 1940's, Freddie Burns And His Ranch Boys, included another guitar player - Sonny James. Sonny is best known for his 1957 smash hit, "Young Love". Dubbed the Southern Gentleman, James had 72 country and pop chart hits from 1953 to 1983, including a five-year streak of 16 straight among his 23 number one hits. He is a member of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
These facts can be validated by pictures and news items from local newspaper clippings in the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the Memphis Press Scimitar. We have included some copies here and the rest will be provided with the guitar.
